The health benefits of sorrel are explained by its rich chemical composition.
“Sorrel is rich in vitamins. It helps replenish vitamin reserves in the body and supports overall health,” says gastroenterologist and hepatologist Olga Arisheva. “Calcium and vitamin K improve the condition of blood vessels and help regulate normal blood clotting. Vitamin A is especially beneficial for people with vision disorders.”
The plant fibers found in sorrel help remove harmful cholesterol from the body. The high content of B-group vitamins supports the nervous system, helps cope with stress, improves mood, and provides additional energy.
Sorrel also contains dietary fiber that supports stable digestive function, reduces appetite, and helps remove toxins from the body. Fiber stimulates intestinal peristalsis, helps fight inflammatory processes in the intestines, and maintains healthy gut microflora.
Sorrel leaves are rich in flavonoids. Researchers from Edith Cowan University in Australia have found that people who consume sufficient amounts of flavonoid compounds (around 500 mg per day) have a lower risk of death from cancer.
