A Doctor Explains the Hidden Risks of Refined Carbohydrates

Regular consumption of pasta and other refined flour products may, in certain cases, contribute to serious health problems, including potential vision issues. This opinion was shared by TV host and physician Elena Malysheva, who discussed the topic on her health program “Live Healthy.”

According to the doctor, the possible connection lies in the high glycemic index of many pasta products. Foods with a high glycemic index can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, leading to increased insulin release in the body.

Malysheva explained that elevated blood sugar may negatively affect the small blood vessels of the retina. Over time, this process can increase the risk of vision impairment, especially in people who already have metabolic disorders or diabetes.

In addition, foods with a high glycemic index tend to stimulate appetite. As a result, a person may feel less satiated and consume larger portions, which can contribute to weight gain and obesity.

At the same time, the doctor emphasized that pasta does not need to be completely eliminated from the diet. Instead, she recommends following a few simple rules to reduce its glycemic impact. One of them is choosing pasta made from lower-grade or whole-grain flour, which is digested more slowly and has a gentler effect on blood sugar levels.

Health experts generally advise maintaining a balanced diet, monitoring portion sizes, and prioritizing foods with a lower glycemic index to support long-term metabolic and eye health.
