Doctor Explains Why Some Desserts May Benefit Gut Health

Can desserts actually be beneficial for people? Some of them can, says immunologist Andrey Prodeus on the TV show “Live Healthy.” Speaking on Channel One, the doctor talked about the unique health properties of the Japanese dessert mochi.

Mochi is made from rice flour, which is known to be a valuable source of resistant starch.

Resistant starch plays an important role in the formation of special fatty acids that support gut health. This has been confirmed by numerous scientific studies. Research shows that the risk of colorectal cancer is lower in people who consume sufficient amounts of resistant starch.

“Why? Because these fatty acids inhibit tumor growth,” Prodeus explained.

This unique nutrient is also found in grains, seeds, and legumes. In addition, resistant starch forms in potatoes and pasta after they have been cooked, cooled, and then reheated. That is why such side dishes are often considered healthier on the second day.
