How to Get Rid of Ants at Home: Simple and Effective Methods

Ants are among the most common household pests. While most species are harmless, they can still contaminate food and become a nuisance. The key to getting rid of them is understanding what attracts them and using simple, practical methods to eliminate both the source and their trails.

There are over 12,000 species of ants worldwide, and most are not dangerous. However, they can carry bacteria and enter homes in search of food.

Step 1: Remove the Attraction

Ants are usually drawn to:

Food crumbs
Sticky spills (like honey or sugar)
Dirty dishes

Eliminate these sources, and in many cases, ants will leave on their own.

Step 2: Destroy Their Trails

Ants follow pheromone trails left by others. To remove these:

Mix vinegar and water (1:3 ratio)
Spray on areas where ants are seen

This helps break the trail and prevents more ants from following.

Step 3: Natural Repellents

Black or Red Pepper

Ants dislike the smell
Sprinkle around entry points and surfaces

Peppermint Oil

Mix 10–20 drops with 2 cups of water
Spray around windows, doors, and baseboards
Keep away from pets

White Vinegar

Mix 1:1 with water
Use to clean floors and surfaces or spray directly
Step 4: Other Solutions

Boric Acid Products

Effective chemical option
Helps eliminate ants more permanently

Cornstarch

Sprinkle over ants and add water
Useful for large infestations
Important Note:

For best results, combine cleaning, prevention, and treatment methods. Keeping your home clean and removing food sources is the most effective long-term solution.
