Physician and television presenter Alexander Myasnikov has spoken about the potential risks associated with two widely used groups of medications. During an episode of the program “About the Most Important Thing” on the Russia 1 TV channel, he noted that certain drugs may be linked to reduced vitamin B12 levels.
According to Dr. Myasnikov, medications used to reduce stomach acidity, such as proton pump inhibitors, as well as some blood sugar–lowering drugs, may interfere with the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 when used regularly. As examples, he mentioned drugs commonly prescribed for acid-related conditions and type 2 diabetes.
The doctor explained that long-term use of these medications may increase the likelihood of vitamin B12 deficiency, particularly in older adults. For this reason, he recommended periodic blood tests to monitor vitamin B12 levels in people who take such medications on a regular basis.
Dr. Myasnikov also pointed out that low vitamin B12 levels may be associated with neurological and cognitive symptoms, including memory and concentration difficulties. He emphasized that in some cases, identifying and correcting a vitamin deficiency may help improve certain symptoms that can resemble cognitive decline.
