Specialists from the Yolyan Hematology and Oncology Center explain that Ewing sarcoma is a type of malignant bone tumor and early detection plays a critical role in successful treatment
Ewing sarcoma is one of the most common types of sarcoma among adolescents and young people It most often affects bones especially in the legs arms and pelvic area In some cases the disease may also involve surrounding soft tissues
Doctors note that the disease has two main stages Local stage occurs when the tumor is limited to the bone or nearby tissue and in such cases treatment success rates can reach about 70 to 75 percent The metastatic stage develops when the cancer spreads to distant organs such as the lungs other bones or bone marrow In these cases recovery chances decrease significantly and may reach about 15 to 30 percent
Common symptoms of Ewing sarcoma may include pain and swelling in the affected area a noticeable mass with increased local temperature unexplained fever or bone fractures
Diagnosis usually involves medical imaging such as X ray CT MRI and PET CT examinations The final diagnosis is confirmed through histological examination of the tumor tissue
In Armenia treatment for Ewing sarcoma is provided at the Yolyan Hematology and Oncology Center which hosts the country’s only pediatric cancer center The center is a member of the Euro Ewing Consortium and follows international medical guidelines used in Europe and the United States
According to specialists treatment outcomes in Armenia correspond to international statistics Comprehensive treatment including chemotherapy radiation therapy and when necessary surgical intervention is available in the country with financial support provided by the state and the City of Smile Charitable Foundation
