Enhanced police operations have continued in Yerevan and various regions of Armenia in recent days following strict instructions from Armenian Interior Minister Arpine Sargsyan. According to reports, the operations have resulted in the discovery of weapons, ammunition and narcotics, as well as individuals who were wanted by law enforcement authorities.
Photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan reported that officers of the Yerevan Criminal Police and community police officers from the Kentron division took more than 15 people to the Kentron police station yesterday on suspicion of illegally possessing or carrying weapons and ammunition.
According to the report, several of those taken to the police station are known within their circles by various nicknames, including “Nardostsi Sergulik,” “Pumpulik,” “Snayperchik,” “Batman,” “Khuchuchik,” “Khututik” and “iPhonechik,” among others.
Police reportedly discovered a handgun, bladed weapons and brass knuckles in the possession of some of the individuals. The report does not indicate that such items were found on every person taken to the police station.
In connection with several of the individuals, officers at the Kentron police division prepared relevant documentation. The materials were subsequently forwarded to Armenia’s Investigative Committee for further proceedings.
The reported operation is part of the recently intensified law-enforcement activities being carried out in the Armenian capital and the country’s regions. Authorities have been focusing on detecting illegal weapons and ammunition, narcotics and individuals wanted by law enforcement agencies.
