The cause of death for Madonna’s older brother, Anthony Ciccone, has been officially revealed.
As reported by TMZ on Sunday, the 66-year-old passed away from complications related to throat cancer and respiratory failure. His specific diagnosis was oropharyngeal cancer — a condition frequently linked to smoking. The death certificate confirms that Anthony was a smoker, and his tobacco use played a role in his decline.
Anthony died in late February. His relationship with Madonna had long been strained, but signs suggested some healing had occurred in the months before his death. After the news broke, Madonna honored her brother on Instagram Stories, sharing nostalgic photos and expressing gratitude for the positive impact he had on her life. According to PageSix, the pop icon also reportedly covered the costs of his rehab treatment prior to his passing.
It’s a heartbreaking loss. Our condolences go out to Madonna and the entire Ciccone family. May Anthony rest in peace.
