Frequent yawning may be associated with chronic fatigue syndrome, which can develop as a result of prolonged overwork and insufficient rest. This was explained by therapist Nadezhda Chernishova in an interview with Moscow 24.
According to the specialist, in cases of chronic fatigue, even eight hours of sleep or a full weekend of rest may not be enough to restore energy levels. She noted that frequent yawning can also be observed in people experiencing anxiety disorders or depression.
Another possible cause mentioned is sleep apnea, a condition in which short pauses in breathing occur during sleep. As a result, a person may not get sufficient restorative sleep, even if they spend enough time in bed. Diabetes was also cited as a potential factor contributing to persistent fatigue and yawning.
“This happens because glucose is not properly absorbed, leaving the body with an energy deficit,” Chernishova explained.
The doctor also emphasized that if unexplained yawning is accompanied by alarming symptoms — such as weakness in the arm, facial asymmetry, or speech difficulties — immediate medical assistance should be sought, as these may be early signs of a stroke.
