Saint Sarkis the Warrior: A Day of Blessings for Youth

The Feast of Saint Sarkis the Warrior is celebrated as a special day of blessing for young people. According to Armenian tradition, this day is closely associated with love, hope, and the future.

On the night preceding the feast, young people traditionally eat a salty flatbread, which is believed to be connected with dreams revealing a future bride or groom.

According to tradition, the flatbread should be divided into seven pieces and eaten entirely. Afterward, one should go to sleep without speaking and, most importantly, without drinking water.

There is a common misconception that the salty flatbread must be prepared by a widow. In fact, tradition holds that preparing and sharing the salty bread symbolizes passing on happiness and lived love. Therefore, this meaningful and responsible role should be fulfilled by a happily married woman. If no married women are present, the bread may also be prepared by a young woman who is in love.

The preparation of the salty flatbread is simple and requires only a few basic ingredients:

1 cup of flour

1 tablespoon of salt

Water

The flour should be sifted and mixed with salt. Water is then added gradually to form a firm dough. The dough is divided into small balls, rolled into thin rounds, and baked on a pan until lightly golden.

Today, this tradition is observed mainly as a cultural custom and a symbolic expression of hope, love, and youthful dreams rather than a strict ritual.
