How Sugary Soft Drinks May Affect Bone Density

As people age, maintaining bone health becomes an increasingly important concern. By the age of 65, osteoporosis is diagnosed in approximately half of women and about one quarter of men, making bone strength a significant public health issue.

What many people may not realize is that one of the most commonly consumed beverages — sugary carbonated soft drinks — may be associated with accelerated loss of bone mass when consumed regularly.

What Research Suggests

According to large-scale observational studies cited by health experts, frequent consumption of carbonated soft drinks has been consistently linked to lower bone mineral density and an increased risk of fractures. The association appears to be more pronounced in women.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Doug Lucas has explained that one possible factor behind this association is phosphoric acid, a common ingredient in many soft drinks. Excess phosphorus may disrupt the balance between calcium and phosphorus in the body. When this balance is altered, the body may release parathyroid hormone, which is involved in bone breakdown.

In addition, phosphoric acid may interfere with calcium absorption and reduce the amount of calcium deposited in bone tissue. Over time, this can negatively affect bone metabolism and contribute to increased bone fragility.

Healthier Beverage Alternatives

Healthcare professionals generally recommend choosing beverages that either support bone health or, at minimum, do not negatively affect it. Water, milk, and unsweetened herbal teas are commonly suggested alternatives to sugary carbonated drinks.

Additional Bone Health Considerations

Maintaining bone strength also involves dietary and lifestyle factors. Including calcium-rich foods such as leafy green vegetables, dairy products, almonds, and tofu may support bone health. Adequate sleep is another important factor, as bone tissue regeneration is particularly active during nighttime rest.
