Popular Drugs Withdrawn Over Safety Concerns

Physician and TV presenter Alexander Myasnikov told URA.RU that certain medications, including drugs known by the brand names “Zantac” and “Reduxin,” have been restricted or withdrawn in a number of countries due to safety concerns, including potential health risks identified during further evaluation.

According to him, some of these medications were widely used in Western countries in the past. In particular, the drug Zantac, also known by its generic name ranitidine, was commonly prescribed for the treatment of gastritis and acid-related stomach conditions. It was widely available in the United States and several European countries, including in low doses without a prescription.

Myasnikov explained that the withdrawal or restriction of medications is a normal part of the pharmaceutical safety process. Initial clinical trials are conducted under controlled conditions and involve a limited number of participants. When a medication is later used by a much larger population, additional side effects or safety concerns may become apparent.

As more real-world data is collected, regulatory authorities may decide to revise recommendations, restrict usage, or remove certain products from the market in order to protect public health. Experts emphasize that patients should not stop or change prescribed medications without consulting a healthcare professional, and should rely on official medical guidance when concerns about drug safety arise.
