A hantavirus outbreak has reportedly been linked to the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius in early May 2026.
According to available information, between May 4 and 7 the incident was associated with several deaths, including a Dutch couple and a German citizen. The vessel, carrying more than 140 passengers and crew members, was traveling from Argentina toward Cape Verde and later the Canary Islands.
In addition to the reported fatalities, authorities are investigating multiple confirmed and suspected infection cases. International contact tracing and monitoring measures have reportedly been launched.
Health experts note that hantavirus infections can cause serious respiratory symptoms and are most commonly linked to contact with infected rodents or contaminated environments. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
At this stage, international health organizations assess the broader public risk as low, while ongoing surveillance and preventive measures remain in place.
