Doctor Explains Why Hantavirus Can Be Dangerous

Infectious disease specialist Natalya Shvedova has warned that one of the main dangers of Hantavirus infection is that its early symptoms can resemble ordinary flu symptoms.

In comments cited by Lenta.ru, the doctor explained that the incubation period may last up to a month. Initial symptoms can include sudden fever, weakness, and body aches, making the illness difficult to identify at an early stage.

Shvedova noted that hantaviruses may cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, a serious condition affecting blood vessels and kidneys. Without timely medical care, the patient’s condition can worsen rapidly.

According to the specialist, infection may occur through inhalation of dust contaminated with dried rodent waste or through consumption of food contaminated by rodents.

The doctor added that there is currently no widely available vaccine against hantavirus, while treatment options remain limited. She advised people to protect food from rodents, wear masks or respirators in potentially contaminated areas, and wash hands thoroughly after cleaning such spaces.

The comments come amid increased attention to hantavirus cases following reports connected with the MV Hondius incident. The World Health Organization has stated that overall public risk remains low at this time.
