As cherry season reaches its peak, many people wonder whether accidentally swallowing a cherry pit can be dangerous.
Therapist and gastroenterologist Olga Shipkova explained that swallowing a single cherry pit is generally not harmful for either adults or children.
According to the doctor, in most cases the body handles the situation naturally, and the pit simply passes through the digestive system without causing problems.
However, Shipkova warned that swallowing a large number of pits could create more serious risks, including intestinal blockage or complications related to appendicitis.
The specialist also addressed concerns about cyanide-related substances sometimes associated with fruit pits. In comments cited by Life.ru, she explained that poisoning would require chewing and consuming a very large quantity of pits, making such a scenario extremely unlikely in everyday life.
Doctors still recommend being careful with small children and avoiding intentionally swallowing fruit pits.
