Greece’s National Public Health Organization (EODY) has urged citizens to exercise extreme caution when cleaning areas where rodents may be present.
According to the agency, one of the most effective ways to prevent infection is the proper disinfection of buildings and spaces that may have been contaminated by rodents.
Health experts explain that Hantavirus is most commonly transmitted when people inhale airborne particles containing the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents. The virus can remain viable for extended periods in dried biological material. During cleaning, dust may become airborne and carry infectious particles into the respiratory system, increasing the risk of infection.
The warning comes amid reports of a Hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which was traveling from Argentina to Cape Verde. According to reports, 13 infections have been identified, and three deaths have been recorded.
Public health specialists recommend paying particular attention to the hygiene and ventilation of enclosed spaces such as:
Basements
Storage facilities
Summer houses and cottages
Agricultural buildings
Other rarely used indoor areas
Experts advise avoiding activities that stir up dust in potentially contaminated areas. Before cleaning, surfaces should be ventilated and disinfected to reduce the risk of exposure.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and emphasize the importance of preventive measures when working in locations where rodent activity may have occurred.
