Oncologist Highlights Two Physical Signs That Could Indicate Cancer

Cancer symptoms can often be vague and are frequently mistaken for less serious conditions.

Speaking to MedikForum, oncologist Andrey Vorobyov highlighted two common warning signs of cancer that may be detected through touch.

Cancer develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, invading and damaging healthy tissues. Early detection is one of the most important factors in improving treatment outcomes and survival rates.

According to Dr. Vorobyov, a lump or hardened area beneath the skin is one of the most common physical signs that should not be ignored.

«Persistent swelling or a lump anywhere on the body should be taken seriously,» he said. «This includes swelling in the neck, armpits, abdomen, groin, breasts, or testicles.»

The doctor explained that persistent lumps can be associated with several types of cancer:

Swelling in the neck, armpit, or groin that does not go away may be a sign of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system.
A breast lump may be a symptom of breast cancer.
A testicular lump may indicate testicular cancer.

Dr. Vorobyov also noted that cancer may present with a variety of other warning signs, including:

Persistent fatigue
Unexplained weight loss or weight gain
Skin changes, such as yellowing, darkening, redness, sores that do not heal, or changes in existing moles
Changes in bowel or bladder habits
A persistent cough or difficulty breathing
Difficulty swallowing
Hoarseness
Ongoing indigestion or discomfort after eating
Persistent, unexplained muscle or joint pain
Unexplained fever or night sweats
Unexplained bleeding or bruising

Doctors emphasize that none of these symptoms alone confirms the presence of cancer, as they may be caused by many other medical conditions. However, if any of these signs persist or worsen, it is important to seek medical evaluation promptly.
