Nostalgia Alert: Kenny Rogers’ last performance of ‘The Gambler’

Kenny Rogers was a fantastic country artist who successfully crossed over to pop and sold over 100 million records worldwide. His career spanned decades, with Kenny scoring hits in jazz, folk, pop, and country.

His most notable song by far was ‘The Gambler.’ Kenny’s signature song was recorded in 1978 after other artists had performed their own renditions over the years. Kenny’s was the first to hit number 1 on the country charts.

The live performance features Kenny singing in front of a cheering crowd. He wears a white suit with a white shirt and an open collar. Kenny walks around the stage, smiling as the crowd claps to the song’s rhythm.

Kenny sings the iconic chorus, “You’ve got to know when to hold ’em. Know when to fold ’em. Know when to walk away, and know when to run. You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table. There’ll be time enough for counting when the dealings done.”

He raises his hands and points at the audience while his band plays behind him on a circular stage. Kenny sings his epic hit to his adoring fans with perfect delivery, and he receives a standing ovation at the end.

‘The Gambler’ was Kenny’s fourth number 1 hit. The song won a Grammy for Best Country Song and was named CMA’s Song of the Year. In 1979, Kenny won the Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for the tune.

The song was one of the first country hits to crossover into the mainstream charts. Kenny was no stranger to hit records scoring over 120 hit singles in his career. He topped the country and pop album charts for more than 200 individual weeks in the United States alone. The legendary singer will always be known for ‘The Gambler.’
