The drill instructor’s commanding presence and immaculate appearance left a lasting impression on Sikking, who dressed Howard with a similar military precision, right down to the jump boots. «It had to be a very military look,» Sikking explained. «When people asked where I got the idea for his look, I told them it was the same look I had in the Army.»
The success of Hill Street Blues took Sikking by surprise. The show, which received multiple Emmy nominations, became the most-awarded series that year. Reflecting on this achievement, Sikking expressed his gratitude, stating, «I’ve been an actor for 50 years, and when I look back at the show, I think it was the best show I was ever on.»
