Elton John, a global music icon with a career spanning nearly six decades, finds himself reflecting on his mortality as his two young sons share their fears about losing their father. At 77, the legendary performer, who holds the coveted EGOT status, knows his artistic legacy will stand the test of time. Yet, the «Rocket Man,» who has faced serious health issues and is often described as a «ticking time bomb,» is keenly aware of his children’s concerns about his absence from their future milestones.
Coming to Terms with Mortality
Despite his larger-than-life presence, the «Can You Feel the Love Tonight» star is deeply attuned to the realities of aging. In a recent documentary, Elton opened up about his sons, Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11. “They think about my mortality. They’re worried about it,” he admitted.
He also pointed out the contrast with his husband, David Furnish, saying, “Not so much David, but me.”
Elton explained that his sons’ love fuels their fears, sharing, “They adore their daddy. They want me to be around forever, and I’d love to be around forever too.” However, he acknowledges the inevitable, saying, “I want to see them grow up, get married, and have children. But realistically, I probably won’t be here for all of that. Life is unpredictable. That’s why I cherish the time we have now—every moment together is precious.”
Finding Peace and Happiness
David Furnish revealed that Elton experienced significant anxiety while watching scenes in the documentary that explored his mortality. “It’s not something you want to discuss with your kids. I don’t want to plant that thought in their minds,” Furnish shared.
He emphasized Elton’s resilience, saying, “He’s been through so much, but he’s incredibly strong. He rarely cancels shows—he’s like an ox. Honestly, he might outlive me. He’s just so tough.”
Furnish also noted that fatherhood brought an immediate shift in Elton’s priorities. “Having our boys was an instant epiphany for him. That’s when he decided to step away from touring for good.”
Now, after 30 years together, the couple is relishing a new chapter in their lives. “He’s genuinely happy,” Furnish said. “This is the life we always dreamed of—time together as a family, and it’s perfect.”
