The 2018 CMA Awards were full of unexpected moments, but none more surprising than Keith Urban’s win for Entertainer of the Year. Urban’s expression said it all—his eyes widened in disbelief as his name was announced for the top honor.
A familiar face in the CMAs’ most prestigious category, Urban had only taken home the award once before, back in 2005. This second win came as a heartfelt surprise. After sharing an emotional hug with his wife, Nicole Kidman, Urban made his way to the stage to accept the honor.
“I’m completely shocked—beyond shocked,” Urban said, visibly emotional and wiping away tears. He dedicated the award to Kidman, whom he affectionately referred to as “Baby Girl,” as well as their two daughters. Urban also took a moment to acknowledge the many people who contributed to his success.
“There are so many people I want to thank. I wish I had more time to do it all properly,” Urban said. “Above everything, I want to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity. I only wish my dad were here to see this, but I believe he’s watching over me tonight.”
Urban continued, expressing gratitude for his career and the support he’s received: “I just feel incredibly blessed and grateful to do what I love. Thank you to everyone for your unwavering support. God bless country music, and God bless you all.”
This year has been a remarkable one for Urban, who released his ninth studio album, Graffiti U, earlier in the year. The album’s accompanying tour featured a string of sold-out performances, including a memorable night at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
