Former Russian Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin has commented on Armenia’s discussions regarding potential European integration, stating that the country’s leadership should prioritize Armenia’s long-term interests.
Speaking to journalists, Stepashin referred to proposals for a referendum in Armenia on the question of joining the European Union.
«We have already proposed holding a referendum in Armenia on whether to join the European Union or not. Let’s see what happens next. But Pashinyan should think about Armenia’s future, not only about himself,» Stepashin said, commenting on Armenia’s European aspirations.
He also noted that upcoming political developments could influence the situation, adding: «Let’s see how the elections go.»
The remarks come amid ongoing discussions about Armenia’s foreign policy orientation and its relations with both the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union.
In recent weeks, several Russian officials have publicly stated that Armenia may eventually need to make a strategic choice regarding its future integration path, while Armenian officials have maintained that the country intends to continue cooperation with various international partners in line with its national interests.
