Cornelian Cherry: Nutritional Value and Potential Health Benefits

Cornelian cherry is native to Asia Minor and the Caucasus, although today the plant grows across a much wider area extending through parts of Europe and toward the Urals.

The fruit is valued for its rich nutritional composition. It contains vitamin C, as well as vitamin A, polyphenols, organic acids, flavonoids, tannins, fiber, pectin and various minerals, including potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

Fresh cornelian cherries are relatively low in calories, while dried fruit and preserves contain considerably more calories because of their concentrated natural sugars or added sugar.

Cornelian cherry has traditionally been used in foods and folk remedies, including jams, infusions and herbal preparations. Its antioxidant compounds and micronutrients may contribute to a balanced diet.

The leaves of the plant have also traditionally been prepared as herbal tea.

However, claims that cornelian cherry can treat influenza, anemia, high blood pressure, diabetes, vascular disease or other medical conditions should be treated cautiously. Nutritional foods can support overall health, but they should not be considered substitutes for evidence-based medical treatment.

For most people, cornelian cherry can simply be enjoyed as a nutrient-rich fruit as part of a varied and balanced diet.
