Strong M-Class Solar Flares Forecast for September 7–8

Strong M-class solar flares are possible on September 7 and 8, according to a forecast cited from Russia’s Institute of Applied Geophysics.

Specialists expect overall solar flare activity to remain relatively low, although individual M-class events may occur. The Earth’s geomagnetic field is forecast to be unsettled on September 7 and slightly disturbed on September 8.

Solar flares can sometimes be accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CMEs). If such an eruption is directed toward Earth, it can cause geomagnetic disturbances and, in some cases, magnetic storms.

However, specialists have not yet indicated that the forecast flares will necessarily be Earth-directed or specified what impact, if any, they could have on Earth.

An M1.0-class solar flare was also reported two days earlier.
