Jimmy Carter Reflects on Life One Year After Rosalynn’s Passing

As we mark the first anniversary of Rosalynn Carter’s passing, her devoted husband, former President Jimmy Carter, continues to navigate life without his beloved partner. At 100 years old, President Carter remains in hospice care, a journey he began over 18 months ago, now accompanied by the deep absence left by Rosalynn’s departure. She passed away on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96, leaving an indelible mark on his life.

“He’s surrounded by the love of family and friends, yet the void left by Mrs. Carter is felt profoundly every single day,” says Paige Alexander, CEO of The Carter Center, in a heartfelt conversation with PEOPLE. Though no longer at the forefront of the foundation he and Rosalynn built together, President Carter remains tethered to the world, finding solace in the enduring legacy of their shared mission.

Founded in 1982, The Carter Center has been a beacon of hope, advancing human rights, combating disease, and championing mental health initiatives. Rosalynn’s passing has only deepened the commitment of those continuing her work, particularly in the areas she held most dear—mental health advocacy and caregiving.

“In many ways, her absence has reignited our dedication,” Alexander reflects, highlighting the Center’s expanding global impact. “We’ve launched a mental health and caregiving office in Washington, D.C., transitioned our mental health program in Liberia to other regions in Africa, and engaged in mental health discussions at the UN General Assembly last September.”

The Carters’ hands-on involvement in the Center’s operations left a lasting impression. “They were always present, walking the halls hand in hand, attending meetings, and even turning off lights when others forgot,” Alexander recalls warmly. “They were truly our working partners, committed to every detail.”

Rosalynn’s influence continues to resonate deeply within the Center. Her lifelong advocacy for mental health and caregiving is now receiving the recognition it has long deserved. “First ladies often fade into the background, but seeing Rosalynn’s contributions acknowledged, especially in mental health, has been incredibly moving,” Alexander shares.

Looking ahead, The Carter Center is determined to carry forward Rosalynn’s mission. “Those fortunate enough to work with her feel her legacy deeply, while those who didn’t are embracing a powerful tradition,” Alexander emphasizes.

The Center plans to utilize modern tools, like the Rosalynn Carter Journalist Fellowship program, to amplify voices in mental health and spark meaningful conversations that reshape societal perceptions.

As we honor Rosalynn Carter on this anniversary, her spirit of service and compassion continues to inspire. Alexander fondly describes her as “selfless, insightful, attentive, and dedicated to making a difference.” Rosalynn once reflected on her life, saying, “I hope people see that I embraced the opportunities I had and gave my all.”

Her unwavering commitment to service not only guides The Carter Center’s ongoing efforts but also serves as a beacon for future generations to follow.
