James And George Belted Out A Theatrical Car-Singing Extravaganza Called “Carpool Karaoke”

Who could forget the unforgettable moment from Comic Relief in 2011 that introduced a sketch destined to become a global sensation? That’s right—it marked the birth of Carpool Karaoke, one of the most beloved TV segments in recent years.

James Corden, already gaining recognition for his role in Gavin & Stacey, reprised his character Smithy for this special event. The skit kicked off with Smithy receiving a call from Lenny Henry, whom he hilariously identified only after being reminded he was the “guy from the Premier Inn adverts.”

Reluctantly agreeing to lend a hand at the BBC Studios for the charity event, Smithy unwittingly set the stage for what would become an iconic cultural moment.

In a delightful twist, George Michael appeared riding shotgun alongside Smithy, much to everyone’s surprise. The tension was immediate as Smithy tried to bar George from accompanying him to the BBC.

The two traded comedic jabs, with George accusing Smithy and his co-character Gavin of being “closet bu*mers,” prompting Smithy to retort, “You’re a joke, George! It’s embarrassing. I can’t walk into Comic Relief with you! Comic Relief’s about helping people LIKE you!”

George’s mock-pouting was comedy gold, but the tone quickly shifted when Smithy turned on Wham!’s classic hit, “I’m Your Man.” What followed was a spontaneous and spirited singalong that would go on to inspire the now-iconic Carpool Karaoke series.

Relive the hilarity and heartwarming moment in the video below, which has since racked up an impressive 17.4 million views!
