Three Foods That May Help Support Healthy Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke. Alongside prescribed treatment and other lifestyle measures, a balanced diet can play an important role in blood pressure management.

Certain foods contain nutrients and compounds that may have a modest beneficial effect on blood pressure.

1. Beets

Beets are rich in dietary nitrates, which the body can convert into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps blood vessels relax and widen, which can contribute to lower blood pressure.

Beets can be eaten cooked or raw, while beetroot juice has also been studied for its potential blood-pressure-lowering effects. However, it should not be expected to produce the same response in everyone or replace medication.

2. Garlic

Garlic contains sulfur compounds, including substances formed from allicin, that have been investigated for their effects on cardiovascular health.

Some studies suggest that regular garlic consumption or certain standardized garlic preparations may produce a modest reduction in blood pressure in people with hypertension. However, claims that garlic reliably prevents blood clots or can substitute for prescribed cardiovascular treatment are not supported.

Garlic can be included as part of a healthy diet, but large amounts or supplements may interact with some medications, particularly medicines that affect blood clotting.

3. Leafy Green Vegetables

Leafy greens such as spinach and lettuce provide potassium and other beneficial nutrients. Potassium helps counterbalance the effects of sodium and plays an important role in normal blood pressure regulation.

Leafy vegetables can be incorporated into salads, meals or smoothies. At the same time, reducing excessive sodium intake and following an overall heart-healthy eating pattern are generally more important than relying on any single food.

People with kidney disease or those taking medications that affect potassium levels should discuss major dietary changes with a healthcare professional.
