The very first winner of the iconic talent show made an emotional return to the stage last night as the farewell season began its live broadcasts.
Tensions were high as American Idol kicked off its final season’s live shows, with Kelly Clarkson delivering a deeply moving performance that left her in tears.
Kelly, who won the inaugural season back in 2002, returned not only as a guest judge but also as the night’s standout performer, reminding everyone why she first captured America’s heart.
Overcome with emotion as she sang Piece By Piece, Kelly broke down mid-performance. The judges, including Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban, also struggled to hold back their tears, ultimately giving her a well-deserved standing ovation.
After her heartfelt performance, Kelly explained, “I’m pregnant, and it’s nostalgic. I can’t believe this is the final season. I’m really sorry I just bawled.”
Following the show, the expectant mother—who is currently pregnant with her second child—described the night as the perfect way to close this chapter. “Such an emotional night. Thank you, American Idol, for a beautiful beginning and a perfect ending,” she shared.
The night wasn’t just emotional for Kelly. Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban were also visibly moved by the moment.
American Idol was officially canceled last year by Fox after its viewership dropped to a series-low average of 11.6 million, including DVR replays. At its peak in 2006, the show reached nearly 36 million viewers, with audiences tuning in to watch Taylor Hicks take the crown, according to Nielsen ratings.
Despite its decline, American Idol made history by launching the careers of superstars like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. It also provided a platform for future icons such as Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert, who now tours with Queen.
