Seventeen-year-old Canaan James Hill wrapped up the American Idol auditions in unforgettable fashion.
Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Hill wowed both the judges and the audience as the final contestant of the audition rounds—earning the season’s coveted third and final Platinum Ticket.
Having just completed high school early, Hill revealed that his decision to graduate ahead of schedule wasn’t just about academics—it was deeply rooted in faith.
When judge Luke Bryan asked what inspired him to finish school so soon, Hill replied,
“So that I can move forward with my gift and fulfill what God has called me to do.”
Then came the moment that brought the room to a standstill. Hill delivered a moving, gospel-infused rendition of “I Need Your Glory” by Earnest Pugh, transforming the audition into a soul-stirring experience.
Lionel Richie, clearly moved, said with emotion in his voice,
“That was so powerful. You are incredibly blessed. I can’t even begin to describe what I just heard.”
Guest judge Carrie Underwood, also visibly impressed, added,
“It was like velvet and butter—smooth yet commanding. I kept thinking, ‘Where has this kid been for 17 years?’ Your gift is undeniable. Thank you for sharing it with us. I’m honestly at a loss for words.”
Hill’s performance not only left a lasting impression—it set a high bar for the season ahead.
