Earlier in the spring, an event occurred in the city that seemed routine. Health authorities removed nearly 20,000 chicken eggs from local stores.

Most of the eggs were considered unsuitable—expired, cracked, or contaminated. They were all discarded into the city landfill, which was surrounded by a barbed wire fence.

The trucks unloaded the cartons of eggs as if they were regular waste. After a few days of rain, the boxes broke apart, birds pecked at some of the eggs, and the rest got lost in the general trash pile.

The incident was soon forgotten by the residents.

But after three months, something happened that no one could have predicted.

One morning, the landfill’s caretaker noticed something unusual: the crows, which usually gathered around the organic waste pile, weren’t there. Curious, he approached—and froze. Something was moving inside the massive heap of trash.

Among the decaying potatoes and empty yogurt containers, thousands of tiny yellow chicks scurried about. Small, squeaky, and alive. There were so many of them.

They were everywhere—between old tires, under plastic bottles, and wedged in the cracks of discarded furniture. How had they survived? How had they hatched without an incubator, a hen, or any kind of care?

Word spread quickly through the city. People flocked to the landfill to witness what they were calling the “miracle.” Scientists were stunned. There was no logical explanation. The landfill was not an environment suitable for hatching, especially not after such a long period of time.

Locals started referring to them as “the chicks from nowhere.”

Some of the chicks were taken home—out of sympathy, while others believed it to be a sign or omen.

Despite the lack of an official explanation, the people of the city felt certain of one thing: these weren’t just chicks. It was a miracle that had emerged from the garbage.
