Mandarins and Evening Snacking: What to Know

Mandarins are a rich source of vitamins and minerals and are often associated with supporting mood and overall well-being. Citrus fruits are commonly described as uplifting, yet nutrition experts note that timing matters, and they may not be suitable at every moment of the day.

According to endocrinologist Galina Yermakova, eating mandarins shortly before bedtime is not recommended. This advice is especially relevant for individuals who are actively trying to lose weight. Metabolism naturally slows down at night, which may cause fruit to digest less efficiently, potentially leading to bloating or discomfort.

Specialists generally recommend having the last meal of the day at least two to three hours before going to sleep. Eating later than this may increase the likelihood of digestive discomfort, disrupt sleep quality, and contribute to fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

People living with diabetes are also advised to avoid eating citrus fruits late in the evening. While mandarins can be included in a balanced diet for this group, they are typically recommended in limited quantities — about two to three fruits — and preferably during the first half of the day.

“This is important because consuming carbohydrates before bedtime may lead to a sharp increase in blood sugar levels in the morning for people with diabetes,” the doctor explained in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

Additionally, nutrition experts often advise against combining citrus fruits with other fruits in the same meal, as this may increase the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort for some individuals.
