Public Debate Continues Over Winter Maintenance in Yerevan

Gevorg Stepanyan, a member of the “Mother Armenia” faction of the Yerevan City Council, has commented on the city’s preparedness ahead of forecast snowfall expected in the coming days.

In a public statement, Stepanyan said that residents should be prepared to clear streets, yards, and sidewalks on their own in order to ensure safe movement, expressing skepticism about the city authorities’ ability to respond effectively.

He criticized the current municipal administration, stating that despite significant spending on de-icing materials such as salt and sand, winter conditions continue to result in hazardous streets and sidewalks. According to him, icy conditions often lead to injuries and increased hospital visits.

Stepanyan also claimed that responsibility for the consequences of snowfall is being shifted onto business owners and residents through fines. He argued that citizens are being treated primarily as subjects of penalties rather than beneficiaries of public services.

The statement reflects the personal opinion of the city council member and comes amid broader public discussion about winter maintenance and urban infrastructure management in Yerevan.
