EAEU Leaders Call for Referendum in Armenia on EU Membership or Continued EAEU Participation

Leaders of several Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states have expressed support for holding a referendum in Armenia regarding the country’s future relationship with the European Union and the EAEU.

According to a statement published by the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov support the idea of conducting a national referendum in Armenia on whether to pursue membership in the European Union or remain within the Eurasian Economic Union.

The statement says the leaders share the view that such a referendum should be held as soon as possible to allow Armenian citizens to determine the country’s future economic integration path.

It also notes that a report assessing the possible consequences of Armenia leaving the EAEU is expected to be presented in December 2026.

According to the statement, preparations related to potential European Union accession are viewed by EAEU member states as posing significant economic risks to the union’s member countries.

The development comes amid ongoing debate in Armenia regarding the country’s future geopolitical and economic orientation.
