Many people believe that sugar is the biggest enemy of healthy teeth, but according to orthodontist Dr. Andrey Zhuk, the greater risk comes from how often it is consumed, rather than the amount alone.
Speaking to Lenta.ru, Dr. Zhuk explained that every time sugary foods or drinks are consumed, bacteria in dental plaque produce acids that attack tooth enamel. Frequent snacking on sweets or sipping sugary beverages prevents the enamel from recovering, increasing the risk of tooth decay.
The specialist also warned that acidic soft drinks, energy drinks, packaged fruit juices, and even lemon water can gradually weaken tooth enamel if consumed regularly, making teeth more vulnerable to wear and cavities.
To help maintain healthy teeth, Dr. Zhuk recommends eating crunchy fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, apples, and celery, which stimulate saliva production and naturally help clean the teeth.
He also highlights dairy products—including cheese, cottage cheese, and plain yogurt—as good sources of calcium and phosphorus, two minerals essential for strong tooth enamel. In addition, foods rich in vitamin D, such as fish, eggs, and nuts, support calcium absorption and contribute to overall dental health.
The dentist emphasized that no food can reverse existing tooth decay. A healthy diet should be viewed as a preventive measure and should be combined with daily oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups to maintain long-term oral health.
