Doctors Say Fecal Incontinence Can Be a Warning Sign of Colorectal Cancer

Fecal incontinence may, in some cases, be an early sign of colorectal cancer, according to urologist Dr. Jason Carter and colorectal surgeon Dr. Ketan Thanki, speaking to HuffPost.

Dr. Carter explained that while fecal incontinence is a less commonly recognized symptom, it is more likely to occur in cases of rectal cancer. However, he noted that most people with colorectal cancer first experience other symptoms, including blood in the stool, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, anemia, or persistent fatigue.

Dr. Thanki said the condition may develop when a tumor affects the nerves responsible for bowel control, reducing sensation or the ability to retain stool. In some cases, fecal incontinence may also occur alongside constipation, when hardened stool blocks the bowel and liquid stool leaks around it.

The specialists emphasized that fecal incontinence is far more commonly caused by conditions unrelated to cancer. However, they advise seeking medical evaluation if any persistent change in bowel function lasts longer than two to three weeks, especially if accompanied by other concerning symptoms.

This information is intended to raise awareness and should not replace professional medical advice. Anyone experiencing ongoing or unexplained symptoms should consult a healthcare provider.
