Russia Plans New Mobile Phone Requirement for Long-Term Migrants

Russian authorities are planning to introduce a new requirement that would apply to foreign nationals arriving in the country for work or long-term stays.

According to Deputy Interior Minister and State Secretary Igor Zubov, migrants who register to stay in Russia for an extended period would be required to obtain a mobile phone linked to an electronic profile.

Speaking at a meeting of the Federation Council’s Committee on International Affairs, Zubov said the proposed system is intended to improve migration administration. Under the plan, the electronic profile would allow authorities to manage migration-related information more efficiently and monitor compliance with registration requirements.

Officials also said the mobile phone could be used to send notifications about important administrative matters, such as the expiration of documents or the need to appear before the relevant authorities. The goal, according to the proposal, is to help migrants receive timely reminders and reduce missed deadlines.

The proposal was presented as part of ongoing discussions on migration management. Additional details regarding implementation and the timeline for the measure have not yet been announced.
