Study Suggests Coffee Compounds Could Support Future Research on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease

Researchers at the University of Texas have identified compounds found in used coffee grounds that may contribute to future treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The findings were published in the scientific journal Environmental Research.

The research focused on caffeic acid, a naturally occurring antioxidant found in coffee beans. Scientists used this compound to create carbon quantum dots—tiny carbon-based nanoparticles that showed promising protective effects in laboratory studies.

According to the research team, these caffeic acid-based carbon quantum dots may help protect brain tissue by neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress, two processes believed to contribute to the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Lead researcher Jyotish Kumar said the team’s goal is to develop treatments that target the molecular mechanisms responsible for these conditions.

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the gradual loss of neurons, leading to declining memory, cognitive function, speech, movement, and other essential neurological abilities.

The researchers also noted that caffeic acid belongs to the polyphenol family of plant compounds, which are known for their antioxidant properties. Unlike many other compounds, caffeic acid has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, allowing it to interact directly with cells inside the brain.

While the findings are promising, the researchers emphasized that the work is still at an early research stage. Additional laboratory studies, animal research, and human clinical trials will be necessary before this approach can be considered a proven treatment for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or other neurodegenerative disorders.
