Azerbaijani Serviceman Who Crossed Into Armenia Shot Woman in Shaki, Authorities Say

An Azerbaijani serviceman who illegally crossed into Armenia shot and wounded an Armenian citizen in the Shaki settlement of Syunik Province, according to Armenia’s National Security Service. The serviceman has since been arrested.

According to the NSS, Azerbaijan’s State Security Service informed the Armenian side on September 29 that a serviceman had left his military unit under unknown circumstances and that he might have crossed the Armenian border. Search operations subsequently began.

At 14:15 on October 1, Armenia’s 112 emergency center received a report that an Armenian citizen had been shot in the leg in Shaki. Police units were dispatched to the area, and authorities later established that the shooting had been carried out by the Azerbaijani serviceman. Criminal proceedings have been initiated.

According to information reported by Hraparak, the injured woman is named Ani and is a mother of five. The outlet reports that she attempted to defend herself and struck the serviceman with a knife, after which he allegedly fired at her and fled. These specific circumstances have not been confirmed in the NSS statement.

The director of Sisian Medical Center said the injured woman is 38 years old and suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh. She was taken to the medical center for examination, and her condition was reported as not life-threatening.

Hraparak has also published a photograph identifying the injured woman together with her husband.

The investigation into the circumstances of the incident is continuing.
