Meet Apo: The 106-Year-Old Tattoo Master Defying Time on Vogue Covers

Thousands gather to receive tattoos from the 106-year-old tattoo master, the last surviving Kalinga warrior tattooist in the Philippines. Recently appearing on the cover of Vogue, she is celebrated as a living legend.

Life often surprises us, even when we think we’ve seen everything. In an extraordinary fashion milestone, she became the oldest model to ever appear on Vogue’s cover, marking a significant moment in history.

This 106-year-old tattoo artist from the Kalinga region was recently featured not only in Vogue but also in the April issue of the Philippine edition. Photographer Artu Nepomuceno beautifully captured her wearing traditional beads, with her tattoos being her most striking feature.

Apo is famed for her unique designs and ornaments, continuing a tradition that spans thousands of years. Her distinctive technique involves hammering a mixture of water and charcoal into the skin using a thorn, a skill she mastered at the age of 16 under her father’s tutelage.

The editor-in-chief of Philippine Vogue describes her as a wise and spirited woman. Even at her advanced age, she is committed to preserving her art, hoping to inspire others with its deep significance.
