Shannen Doherty, ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ and ‘Charmed’ Star, Dies at 53

Shannen Doherty, renowned for her roles in “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed,” has passed away at the age of 53 after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.

“With a heavy heart, I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” her publicist Leslie Sloane announced. “She fought cancer for many years with incredible strength and determination.”

Doherty gained fame in 1990 as Brenda Walsh on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” playing a young girl navigating life in Beverly Hills alongside her twin brother, Brandon. The show became immensely popular, tackling issues like drug abuse and racism, and Doherty became a focal point of media attention.

After four seasons, she left the show amid reports of on-set tensions. Doherty later starred in “Charmed” as Prue Halliwell, a witch battling evil with her sisters. She directed several episodes before departing at the end of the third season.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Doherty began her career as a child actor with roles in “Father Murphy” and “Little House on the Prairie.” She also appeared in films like “Heathers” and Kevin Smith’s “Mallrats.”

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, Doherty initially went into remission, but the cancer returned in 2019. Despite her illness, she continued to work and hosted the podcast “Let’s Be Clear With Shannen Doherty.” She married photographer Kurt Iswarienko in 2011, and they filed for divorce in 2023.
