Mia and her mother had always shared a deep bond. They were each other’s confidants, sharing secrets, happiness, and even their burdens. Whenever one needed the other, they were always there.
One day, Mia’s mom called to tell her that she was going to start renovating the house again, something she loved doing from time to time. She asked Mia not to visit for the next few months while the renovations were underway.
As time passed, Mia noticed that her mom called less frequently. When she did, her voice seemed oddly distant. Mia sensed something was off, but with her work commitments piling up, she brushed it off, thinking her mom was just tired from all the house renovations.
Yet, that nagging feeling didn’t go away. Something wasn’t right. One day, Mia couldn’t shake it any longer, so she hopped into her car and drove to her mom’s house.
Upon arrival, Mia was met with an unsettling sight. The once immaculate garden, where her mom had lovingly tended to her flowers, was now overgrown. This wasn’t like her mom at all. Anxiety gripped Mia’s heart. What was going on?
She rushed to the front door and found it unlocked—a rare occurrence, as her mother always kept the door secure.
Inside, everything seemed normal. There were no signs of the renovation she had mentioned—no paint, no tools, no dust. The house was pristine, just as Mia remembered it.
Calling out for her mother, she got no response. With growing concern, Mia hurried upstairs to her mom’s bedroom. There, on the bed, was a frail figure she barely recognized. Her mother, once vibrant and full of life, now looked fragile and weak. Her long hair was gone, her rosy complexion had turned pale, and she was too weak to rise from the bed.
Barely able to speak, her mother whispered Mia’s name.
«Oh, sweetheart,» her mom muttered softly, her voice cracking, «I didn’t want you to find out like this.»
Tears welled in Mia’s eyes. «Mom, what’s going on?» she asked, her voice trembling.
“I have cancer,” her mother confessed, her voice breaking. “I’ve been going through chemotherapy for months now. I didn’t tell you because I thought I could handle it on my own. You’ve been working so hard for your promotion, and I didn’t want to burden you…”
Tears streamed down her mother’s face. “I’ve always been your strength, and I couldn’t let you see me like this.”
Mia’s heart shattered. She felt immense guilt for not visiting sooner when her instincts told her something was wrong. But time couldn’t be reversed.
She gently took her mother’s hand and held her close, promising that she was there now and everything would be alright. Mia reassured her of how much she meant to her, how her mother’s love and guidance had shaped her into who she was. As Mia kissed her mother’s forehead and hands, whispering words of love and gratitude, her mother slipped away.
Suddenly, she was gone.
Mia stayed beside her, clinging to the warmth of their final embrace as her body shook with sobs.
This story is a poignant reminder to cherish the moments with the people we love, no matter how busy life becomes. And when something feels wrong, we should always trust our instincts.
