Soldiers Hospitalized With Intestinal Infection in Armenia, Report Says

A number of Armenian servicemen have reportedly been hospitalized with an intestinal infection, while the exact circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been officially clarified.

According to the Armenian newspaper Hraparak, a serious suspected food poisoning incident occurred approximately a week ago at a military unit in Nubarashen. The newspaper reports that a large number of servicemen were taken to the National Center for Infectious Diseases, while those with milder symptoms received treatment at the military unit’s medical facility.

The publication, citing its sources, claims that the illness was caused by food. However, this detail has not been officially confirmed.

The National Center for Infectious Diseases confirmed to the newspaper that servicemen suffering from an intestinal infection had been admitted to the medical facility. However, representatives of the center said they could not provide information about which military unit the soldiers came from or the circumstances in which they became ill.

The newspaper also contacted Bakur Melkonyan, head of Art Lunch, a company that previously supplied food to the Armenian military. According to Melkonyan, his company has not supplied food to the Armed Forces for more than a year, as the relevant tender was won by four other companies.

Hraparak reported that it also attempted to obtain clarification from Armenia’s Ministry of Defense but had not received a response by the time its article was published.

At this stage, the number of affected servicemen, the specific military unit involved and the exact source of the intestinal infection have not been officially established.
