He struggled with significant health challenges throughout his life. At one point in 2009, he weighed 920 pounds. His story gained national attention in 2010 when he appeared on TLC’s Ton of Love, where he successfully reduced his weight to 540 pounds through hard work and determination.

Combs’ breakthrough moment came during Season 2 of the U.S. version of The X Factor, where he delivered an emotional and unforgettable rendition of Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings.” His performance moved the judges, particularly Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, who pledged their support if he continued his health journey. Despite his elimination from the competition, his performance left a lasting impression on viewers and judges alike.

Reflecting on their life together, Kay Combs shared, “I’m so grateful to have been his wife for 25 years and to have had the honor of being his best friend.”
