Doctor Highlights Possible Heart Health Benefits of Boiled Potatoes

Endocrinologist Zukhra Pavlova has stated that moderate consumption of boiled potatoes may help support the body’s natural protection against cardiovascular diseases. Writing on her Telegram channel, Dr. Pavlova noted that including boiled potatoes in the daily diet may be associated with increased longevity by reducing the risk of heart-related conditions.

In support of this view, she referred to the results of a study conducted by Norwegian researchers. According to the study, consuming approximately 100 grams of potatoes per day was associated with a 4% reduction in mortality risk related to cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease and acute myocardial infarction.

How Potatoes Should Be Consumed

Dr. Pavlova emphasized that these potential benefits apply specifically to boiled potatoes that are allowed to cool after cooking. They should be eaten plain — without salt, butter, oil, or high-calorie sauces.

Why Cooled Boiled Potatoes May Be Beneficial

According to the endocrinologist, cooled boiled potatoes are a rich source of potassium, a mineral that helps the body remove excess sodium. Excess sodium can contribute to fluid retention, swelling, and elevated blood pressure.

Additionally, when potatoes cool, part of their starch converts into resistant starch. This form of starch is digested more slowly and is associated with a less pronounced rise in blood glucose levels after consumption.
