An unusual and concerning incident occurred in Yerevan on August 10, when a newborn baby girl was discovered at a playground near an apartment building.
At around 8:40 PM, authorities received information that a newborn had been found under metal sheets at a playground near 13 Halabyan Street.
Before community police officers arrived at the scene, a medical team from Yerevan’s 103 ambulance service had already provided the newborn with emergency medical assistance. The medical team treated the baby, including securing the umbilical cord, before transporting her to the Republican Institute of Reproductive Health, Perinatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology in Yerevan.
Doctors were able to stabilize the newborn and save her life. However, the baby is expected to remain under medical supervision for some time.
MediaHub contacted Armenia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs to determine whether the child’s mother had been identified. The ministry said that the mother of the newborn found in Yerevan had not yet been located.
“The police continue extensive operational and investigative measures aimed at clarifying all the circumstances of the incident,” Interior Ministry spokesperson Narek Sargsyan told MediaHub.
Armenia’s Ministry of Health had previously stated that the newborn’s life was not in danger. According to the ministry, the baby is breathing with the assistance of a CPAP device and remains under the supervision of medical professionals.
The Investigative Committee also told MediaHub that criminal proceedings had been initiated in connection with the case and that a preliminary investigation was underway.
Authorities continue their efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and locate the newborn’s mother.
