
The average surface temperature of the world’s oceans reached 21.08°C on August 14, according to ERA5 reanalysis data cited by Armenia’s Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center.
The reported figure is not only the highest recorded so far this year but also represents a record value for August 14 within the available observation period.
The current temperature anomaly is estimated at +0.64°C, meaning that ocean surface temperatures are significantly above the reference average.
Global ocean surface temperatures typically show two annual peaks. The first usually occurs during the second half of March, while another maximum is generally observed around the middle of August.
Historically, the March peak has tended to be higher than the one recorded in August. According to the reported data, however, the pattern has changed in 2026, with the August ocean surface temperature exceeding the maximum recorded in March.
The report links this development with strengthening El Niño conditions, which can contribute to higher ocean surface temperatures in parts of the world.
ERA5 is the climate reanalysis system produced by the Copernicus Climate Change Service at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. It combines observations with advanced modelling to provide consistent estimates of atmospheric, land and ocean-related climate variables dating back to 1940.
Recent reporting based on Copernicus data has also highlighted exceptionally high global sea temperatures and widespread marine heatwaves during the summer of 2026.
