Two Symptoms You Should Not Ignore if They Keep Occurring in the Morning

Early detection can improve treatment outcomes for many types of cancer. However, there are no symptoms that reliably indicate cancer simply because they occur in the morning. Some persistent symptoms, whether noticed in the morning or at other times of day, should nevertheless be discussed with a doctor.

1. Unexplained Night Sweats

Waking up with clothes or bedding repeatedly soaked in sweat, despite a comfortably cool room, can have many possible causes.

Night sweats can occur with infections, hormonal changes, medications and other medical conditions. They can also occur with certain cancers, particularly lymphomas and some blood cancers.

Pay particular attention if persistent night sweats occur together with unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, swollen lymph nodes or unusual fatigue.

2. A Persistent Cough or Hoarse Voice

A cough or hoarse voice that persists for several weeks should not automatically be attributed to a cold.

Common causes include respiratory infections, allergies, asthma, smoking and acid reflux. However, a persistent or changing cough can also require evaluation for more serious conditions, including diseases affecting the lungs or throat.

Seek medical advice particularly if symptoms persist for around three weeks or longer, worsen over time, or are accompanied by coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss, difficulty breathing or chest pain.

Important: These symptoms do not necessarily mean that a person has cancer. They have many more common causes. If they persist, recur without an obvious explanation or are accompanied by other concerning changes, a medical evaluation is appropriate.
