Mary-Kate Olsen says she and her twin sister felt like ‘little monkey performers’ – they quit acting entirely

The Olsen sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley, made an indelible mark on Hollywood during the 90s when they portrayed the irresistibly adorable Michelle Tanner on the beloved TV sitcom Full House. Initially, the producers had already selected another set of twins for the iconic role, but a single glance at the charming Olsens persuaded them to change their minds and cast Mary-Kate and Ashley instead.

The sisters took turns playing Michelle due to the demanding filming schedule, a testament to their versatility and dedication. Full House aired from 1987 to 1995, captivating audiences worldwide and propelling the girls to acting stardom virtually overnight.

Their remarkable success led them to establish their own company and assume the roles of CEOs at the tender age of six. By the time they turned ten, they had already become the youngest self-made millionaires in history.

Unfortunately, the end of Full House coincided with the dissolution of the Olsen sisters’ parents’ marriage, a challenging period that prompted them to immerse themselves in new projects and films to cope with the upheaval.

In their personal lives, the sisters were described as shy. They were even placed in separate classrooms at school to encourage independence and self-sufficiency.

Reflecting on their childhood, Mary-Kate expressed a sense of detachment from their early years, admitting in an interview with Marie Claire that she wouldn’t wish their upbringing on anyone. She likened their experience in front of the cameras to «little monkey performers.»

During their illustrious acting careers, the famous twins starred in over 30 movies, released music albums, videos, and authored a series of books. Their final joint film venture, «New York Minute,» received mixed reviews from critics, prompting the sisters to pivot towards careers as fashion designers.

Today, they oversee two acclaimed clothing brands, «Elizabeth and James» and «The Row,» renowned for their global appeal and impeccable craftsmanship.

As for their private lives, the Olsens maintain a low profile, revealing little about their personal affairs. Rumors circulated in 2008 suggesting that Mary-Kate was romantically involved with the late actor Heath Ledger, although she never confirmed this speculation herself.
