For my 80th birthday, all I wanted was to see my daughter, so I decided to drive over and surprise her. When she opened the door, she looked uneasy and asked, «Dad, what are you doing here?»
Smiling, I replied, «I just wanted to spend my birthday with you.» But her response caught me off guard. «Dad, you can’t stay,» she said, «I’m really busy right now.»
Disappointed, I suggested waiting on the couch until she had some free time, but she firmly shook her head. «No, Dad, you need to leave,» she insisted. Reluctantly, I walked back to my car. As I was about to leave, I heard noises from inside and glanced through the window, spotting two unfamiliar people. Concerned for my daughter’s safety, I decided to call the police.
The officers arrived quickly and approached the house cautiously. After a tense wait, they led the two strangers out in handcuffs. My daughter rushed outside, tears in her eyes, and hugged me tightly. «I’m so sorry, Dad,» she cried. «I was trying to protect you. They broke in just before you came. I didn’t know what to do, and I was scared for your safety.»
Holding her close, I reassured her, «It’s alright, sweetheart. I’m just glad you’re safe.»
After speaking with the police, they assured us the intruders would face justice. Despite the unexpected events, spending time with my daughter made it the best birthday I could have ever wished for.
