Oncologist Andrey Vorobyov, in an interview with the MedickForum portal, spoke about the symptoms of bowel cancer that should never be ignored. According to the specialist, there are certain warning signs of this type of cancer that require immediate medical consultation, especially if they appear without a clear reason and persist for more than three weeks.
The doctor emphasized that delaying a visit to a specialist may lead to the disease being diagnosed at a much later stage, which significantly reduces the chances of successful treatment. Early detection plays a crucial role in improving survival rates and treatment outcomes in cases of colorectal cancer.
Among the key symptoms, the oncologist highlighted persistent and unexplained changes in bowel habits. These may include frequent bowel movements, constipation, diarrhea, or alternating episodes of both. Such changes, when they occur suddenly and without an obvious dietary or lifestyle cause, should be taken seriously.
In addition, abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying may also indicate possible problems with the intestines. The appearance of unusual masses or swelling in the abdominal or rectal area is another alarming sign that should prompt medical evaluation.
Unexplained weight loss and general weakness may also accompany bowel cancer, especially in more advanced stages. However, one of the most obvious and dangerous warning signs is the presence of blood in the stool. This symptom should never be ignored, even if it appears occasionally or without pain.
Doctors recommend paying close attention to any persistent changes in digestion and overall well-being. Regular screening and timely medical check-ups are especially important for people over the age of 50, as well as for those who have a family history of colorectal cancer or chronic intestinal diseases.
